Workshop A: How to Link Your Communication to Organizational Strategy and Measure Its Impact
Sinickas Communications Inc.

It’s hard to connect our work with our organization’s desired results unless we plan our communication strategies from the beginning to help deliver those results. This workshop will give you an easy-to-follow, step-by-step process to connect communication to business goals—and then prove the value of the communication.

Specifically in this session, you will learn the difference between communicating about an organizational strategy and communicating in a way that actually fulfills the strategy—sometimes without even mentioning the strategy itself.

You will also be provided with a step-by-step process for engaging your executive management in communication planning in a way that feels like other, logical business processes they are comfortable with, including:

  • Determining which stakeholder groups are most important in helping to achieve a particular goal
  • Identifying the ideal behaviors for each stakeholder group to reach the goal
  • Discovering through informal research which knowledge and attitude messages are contributing to the current (incorrect) behaviors and which messages would better motivate the ideal behaviors
  • Choosing the best channels for the ideal knowledge and attitude messages
  • Setting measurable objectives for the messages and channels
  • Developing measures that will connect your communications with achievement of the ideal behaviors and organizational goals

Workshop B: Implementing Innovative Design Approaches For Employee Communications, Intranets & Digital Workplaces To Improve Productivity & Achieve Results
Health Standards Organization

One of the most frequent questions asked by employee communications teams is how to best get communications out to an audience that is already struggling with information overload?  The answer lies in user-centered design that is supported by an understanding of how people work, build relationships and behave within your workplace.

Effective, powerful and engaging communications is more than ever about embracing approaches that recognize your employees’ ability, desire and motivation to absorb communications based on their context.  One example is that of designing for the need of an employee who spends most of their time on a mobile device – what formats are they more open to, and what might they need to know?

This workshop is extremely valuable for anyone who is interested in innovative design approaches for employee communications, intranets and digital workplaces that allow the organization to stay aligned, make better decisions and pivot in today’s rapidly changing landscape.

Dive into topics such as:

  • Trends in user experience design for the digital workplace
  • A persona spectrum for communications and other useful tools
  • Learn how to apply and practice different concepts

How a Few Key Intranet Changes Can Transform Your Internal Communications Strategy
UPMC

UPMC updated its intranet with only a few key drivers: personalized content, a simple, jargon-free structure, and accurate and verified information. The end result is a cleaned-up, governed site where employees can find what they need more easily. The upgraded site caught the attention of other site owners at UPMC, and now they are coming together to build a portal-like digital space for employees. So, how did a successful intranet transform their internal communications strategy?

In this session, you’ll see:

  • The switch to an "information first" internal communications strategy and why the intranet was the first step
  • UPMC’s journey from many intranets for 80,000 employees to a unified digital workplace
  • How personalization, a topic-based information architecture, and up-to-date, governed content transformed the value of UPMC’s intranet

How to Create Employee Personas to Better Understand and Communicate With Users
Mayo Clinic
Every successful company focuses its attention towards understanding the needs of customers, but rarely does it focus the same level of attention towards their own employees. Personas help project members understand, empathize, and communicate with user groups they may never see face-to-face.

The goal of the Institutional Personas project was to better understand Mayo Clinic's employees, so that designers, developers, and analysts could create better products and services; if the employees were supported with user-friendly tools and resources, they would in turn provide better patient care.

Several unique challenges faced this team. Creating personas on this scale was new territory. Additionally, creating personas that are not project-specific posed difficulty because it was unknown ahead of time what kind of information they would need to gather. Finally, making the personas available to everyone at the institution and educating key user groups on how to leverage persona insight continues to be an ongoing effort of the team.

In this session, discover why institutional personas are important in any organization and how using these personas can help you save time and money, including:

  • How personas help project team understand and empathize with users
  • Steps to create institutional personas and how to use them
  • Challenges to prepare for during the creation and maintenance process of the institutional personas
  • Best practices of persona validation process and governance
  • How personas help content owners create quality content to drive user adoption

Walking the Walk: How Internal Communications Can Help Promote Health and Prevent Chronic Disease
CDC

For many of us, our day-to-day work is focused on convincing our patients, customers or constituents how they should live healthier, take better care of their families and prevent disease.

Often we are talking the talk, but not necessarily walking the walk.

Many offices look the same these days: employees sitting at their desks for hours on end, fast food in one hand, smart phone in the other, listening to conference calls, responding to patient or customer emails, and juggling family carpool and after school activities with impending deadlines.

In this session, you will hear a real-world example of how one organization is using internal communications to promote employee wellness, and how through workplace wellness efforts, you can:

  • Draw attention to internal communication strategies and vehicles
  • Help break down silos within the organization
  • Spotlight the connections between areas of expertise and portfolios
  • Promote health and prevent chronic disease among employees
